NYU MARRON INSTITUTE OF URBAN MANAGEMENT
United States
Приєднався 23 лип 2013
The Marron Institute conducts innovative applied research, working with cities to take on critical challenges of urban living. Started with a generous gift from Donald B. Marron, the Institute operates on a model of academic venture capital in which the faculty who run research programs receive seed funding. Faculty members use seed funds to develop their programs, hire research staff and build portfolios of externally-funded projects that have the potential to improve outcomes in cities. Currently, the Marron Institute has four major research programs focused on urban planning, environmental health, criminal justice, and public sector performance and innovation.
Globally, cities are home to more than half of the world’s population-4 billion people and growing. The chief focus of Marron's faculty and researchers is the pursuit of sponsored research that will extend the impact of the Institute’s founding gift and have a positive and measurable impact on life in cities the world over.

Building Together (Thailand)
Building Together, a self-help and mutual-aid housing project, was founded by Angel, together with a Thai colleague, in 1978. They acquired a plot of land with international donor funds, planned the site with 60-square-meter plots, created its infrastructure, and recruited 200 families from the informal settlements of Bangkok to build their two-story houses together in ten clusters of 20 families each. Houses were built from modular concrete elements produced by the people in an on-site factory. Each group built a cluster of 20 houses together and then allocated the houses to members by lottery. Members then finished the house interiors and facades by themselves. Families worked evenings and weekends for ten months to complete the basic houses, putting in some 1,800 hours of work. All received mortgage loans from the Government Housing Bank. The Building Together project is still a prime example of blending together three vital societal goals: creating shelter, building community, and the empowerment of the poor to take charge of their lives.

10:35 - Organic vs engineered. Organic communicate with environment with stressors only. 12:09 - Organic material need Variability in environment to get better. Complex system success depends on failing early and rapidly. 12:28 - You don't improve by planning but by experimentation. Convex experimentation.

I feel like I’m watching Hari Seldon
such a baby. no flash I beg you..
This is intriguing as a way to experiment and scale what works, but also to encourage fresh civic commitment so people feel like it's "their" place, were they crafted the values. I'd be curious about the specifics, though. The assumption would be that existing cities have become ossified and sclerotic. So is this about empowering communities to change specific policies? What would they do ultimately differently from the existing governments?
Sad that no reference to soil conditions as a factor to the difference and degree in costs of subway projects. Singapore will have the 2nd most costly area to build a subway, most of the city is built around a tropical narsh and swamp making tunneling more costly to engineer
I know I'm late to the party, but found 1:09.00 to be an interesting point. During COVID, I understood from my news organizations (maybe our highway projects here in Chicago), but mostly for the LA transit projects, that they were able to complete things much faster due to not needing to adhere so strictly to MOT, to the commuter schedule, as people were not using those methods of transit.
Una ciudad chárter es una ciudad cuyo sistema de gobierno se define por los propios estatutos de la ciudad, más que por las leyes estatales, provinciales, regionales o nacionales.

Hello NYU Marrion Institute of Urban Management is there a contact from you I can get to discuss the issue of measuring urban expansion in Kenya
Jerusalem AND Alon in the same webinar, feeling very blessed!
Very interesting
His excellency Dr. Mekuria has done a good job providing necessary feedback about the merits of the program. But as a natural scenario for any massive program of this size, there must be challenges encountered and errors made while pursuing the program. Being an Ethiopian architect and urban planner (Msc) myself, I have a strong belief that the program has had a huge success but also unexpected/ unnecessary impacts on social, environmental, political situations which should have been discussed here in this platform. Very great discussion and very glad to see the exposure of the success of the program!!!

okay thank you! Is Urban containment is a more viable policy option than urban expansion for Sub Saharan African countries?
I did not watch the video but I saw Taleb and clicked like. Great guy!
Position sizing in fancy terms. Trading is least intellectual activity.

Extremely poor audio.. And this is developed country. Odd, that developed countries can't put a reasonably better sound quality everytime...
They need better transportation for all that.
like si viniste x tarea q te dejo la profe XD <3
when you say "urban footprint" what do you mean? total municipal area? developed area?
New technology replaces old technology, car replaces cart pulled by horses. Today are few city states, Singapore,Monaco, San Marino and Vatican. City state is not s viable model.
New tech doesn't always replace old tech, and new tech isn't necessarily always better than older tech...
